The metal bowl was padded on the inside by cloth rags, held to the head by leather straps, and frequently carried hinged cheekguards to protect the sides of the face in battle. They also often sported plumes or crests to help identify unit and rank of the soldiers in the growing armies of the period. In game terms, a _helmet_ is a basic piece of armor protecting just the head. It does not protect the face or neck very well. _Helmet_b_ is the 'Coolus' type Italian helmet. It is made of iron and bronze and features a simple neckguard and cheekpieces. It is a simple and reliable helmet used by the early Roman troops. %%% !!Usage Equip the helmet in your inventory.
