MasterQuests
Master Quests
You begin your life in the world in "Attending" status. This means you are under the protection of a Roman Master or Barbarian Celt Elder. You are protected from combat while Attending (however, you cannot attack anyone, either) but you also cannot own property (including setting piles and crops to private ownership as well as owning a house) until you have left Attending. What is attended.
Your options for leaving the Attending state are:
- Complete the Tasks set out for you by your Master or Elder. These tasks are mainly crafting tasks so if you are a warrior, do the first three tasks and then ask to be de-attended (see next option).
- Have a player Lord/Lady (Barbarian) or Magistrate (Roman) "de-attend" you. To find out who is the current Lord/Lady press F10 or type: /info
- IMPORTANT: After completing all the tasks or becoming deattended you will lose any piles you have made (clay, firewood and logs).
The Master is near the place that you arrive in Roma Victor. Once you find him, put your + cursor over him and hit Spacebar. Select the converse option and type 'master' in your chat box. That will start your sequence of tasks from him.
NOTE: Everyone starts out Attending. If there is no Magistrate elected then you are all in the same boat. Help each other out if you can, whether it's advice, directions or actually helping to make the piles.

You need to contact some merchants during your quests (click on your errand_missive to know which one), this one is for Roman
These quests may not appear in the same order as below:
Get Clothes
When you recieve the scroll, click on it and it will show a description. Read its description to find out where you are to take it. If you're a Barbarian, it will most likely say take it to the hidescap merchant. If you are Roman it will most likly say take it to the whorl_a merchant. You will then have to converse with the merchant and click the scroll to present it to him, and then you will be given a suitable garment to put on.
Fill an Amphora with Water
Take an amphora_b to the river. There is a river east and a little south of Erring, in the next board over. In Corstopitum there is a river to the south and one to the north just past the fourm. To fill the amphora, stand in the water and click on the amphora, choosing the refill option. If tracking is off (meaning you see yourself standing in the water, but the game doesn't "think" you are), hit F5 every 20 seconds or so until it tells you that you "cannot forage underwater."
Get Shoes
When you recieve the scroll, click on it and It will show a description. Read its description to find out where you are to take it. If you're a Barbarian it will most likly say that it is intended for the boot merchant. If you are, Roman it will most likley tell you to take it to the blade_small_blunt merchant. You will then have to converse with the merchant and click the scroll to present it to him, and then you will be given suitable footware to put on.
Make a Firewood Pile
If you are a Barbarian in Erring, then to the west of the North Fort, there is a sizeable woods. If you are a Roman in Corstopitum, then cross the southern river and travel west until you run into woods. Either way, walk into the those woods and hold down the F6 key until your inventory is full of firewood.
Things to know before going to make your pile.
- You must have at least 1 point in construction. A barbarian should seek the hatchet_a merchant in Erring just to the east of the celtic elder; a Roman should seek the sand merchant. Converse with the proper merchant, and type /learn construction confirm in the chatbox. Repeat two times.
- You must have at least 1 point in Woodcutting. A barbarian should seek the handsaw_a merchant in Erring just to the west of the celtic elder, but a Roman should seek the woodplane merchant. Converse with the proper merchant, and type /learn woodcutting confirm in the chatbox.
Walk outside the woods and find a level place. Type /Construct and then click on the stick the master gave you, in your inventory. The stick will have new red tab options when you are inside the construction site. One of those new options is to create a firewood pile.
Choose that option and then click a piece of firewood. This time there will be an option to add item to the project, which you should do. The item will disappear, and a blue progress bar will tell you how much more time is left until you can add another piece of firewood in the same way. Add time for a firewood pile is 20 seconds for each piece.
To complete a firewood pile, you will need to add 125 pieces of firewood. Type /project while in the construction site to find out how much more firewood is left until you can finish the project. When you have 100% of the required firewood added, type /projectfinish. If you hurry with the gathering and adding building at the edge of the forest, you will be able to finish in 40 minutes, it will go even faster if you let another player stand in the projectsite to help.
For more help with piles, see Piles Overview.
Get a Fish
The master will give you a spear varying in quality which you should equip. Go find a river and stand in it. Click the spear in your inventory and choose the option to fish with it. You probably will not find a fish by the time your spear is in need of repair. In that case, go take your crappy spear and find a grindstone_a to repair it. If, however, you were lucky to catch a fish, go to a stove and attach by spacebaring it, then click on the fish and choose the option to cook it. You will need a piece of firewood in your inventory.
Alternatively, you can buy a fish at the barbarian or Roman fish merchant and just sell the spear. Don't forget, do not eat the fish. You need to actually give it to Master to complete the quest. Cooking it isn't enough.
Make a Clay pile
Find clay. Barbarians will have trouble here, because they must gather it in a riverbed or buy it from one of two merchants in the East Fort. Repeat the construct steps for firewood, only with the pieces of clay. You will need to gather a total of 150 pieces of clay. You also need at least 1 point of skill in Pottery.
This will take about 3 hours if you make it from scratch with 0 foraging and the projectsite just by the side of the riverbed.
Get a pair of tongs_a
Buy them from a merchant. Tongs are one of those things that cannot be made from scratch (i.e. you need a set of tongs to work with the metal you need to make a set of tongs). The Master will reward you with money for bringing the tool to him, which may or may not cover your cost. Spacebar on all the sets of tongs around the merchant and pick the one with the lowest quality (it will be the cheapest). You may need to page through multiple pages of his inventory to find the absolute lowest quality one.
Get a bread
Buy it from a merchant. You can try making one if you want to try baking, but it will take a very long time and probably be more expensive in the long run. The Master rewards sesterces for this, so buying it is the most realistic thing to do. Again, spacebar on each loaf the Merchant offers to find the cheapest one available.
Make a Log Pile
Buy logs from a log merchant, and repeat the process for other piles, only with logs. This will cost about 100 Sesterces (more or less depending on the average quality of logs the merchant has available). You will need 50 logs to complete the pile.
Alternatively, you can go the forest and use a handsaw to fell a tree, and use the handsaw on it to extract the logs. The handsaw the Master gives you will only let you cut a couple of logs before breaking, so you will have to buy a good handsaw from the Handsaw Merchant if you want to do it this way (probably more expensive, but a decent investment if you're planning to be a woodsman).
You can get a little money back if you disassemble the log pile (AFTER talking to the Master) and selling the logs back to the Log Merchant. He'll only buy logs with greater than 1/1 quality, and he won't pay much. Unless you're really hard up for money, it's more neighbourly to leave the pile for others to use.
If you're planning to personally make the Workbench the Master requires later on, extract 4 logs from the pile.
As this guide was written at least one year ago, this part of the attending quest has become more difficult. Log piles are no longer left as public. As your pile will be public until you leave attending status it is under constant threat of being pilfered. The handsaw_a given to you is practically worthless, as you'll only get a couple of logs. Buying handsaw_a can be costly as it ranges from 680 to 2100 Sesterces. Also, with poor woodcutting skill you will damage the handsaw_a rapidly. A quality 59 handsaw_a degraded to 1 after 17 logs. Repairing the handsaw_a is fairly costly, say around 300 Sesterces. All in all this has become a 2.5k Sesterces investment unless you find a friend that will allow you to transfer their oak pile to you, so you can re-stack it and call it your own.
Get a Chisel
Buy it from the Chisel merchant. Making any of these items is not a simple procedure; if you want to be a blacksmith in the game, get out of Attending first and then start your career. Again, the Master will compensate you, so find the cheapest one available.
Build a Workbench
Start a construction, and then click on a log in your inventory. Select the option to make a workbench, which requires the following materials:
The other option is to find someone that has already made and/or owns a workbench_a. If they transfer the bench to you, the Master will give you credit for making the bench. Just remember to transfer the bench BACK to the person that helped you, or you'll probably find that you have a tough life ahead.
Build a Handcart
This is a rather complex job, which requires a fair amount of advancement in several skills to avoid collapsing the project site due to inexperience and poor quality materials. If you plan to be a carpenter, this may be a good way to grind some of these skills, so do the wood work first (to avoid losing the metalworks if the site collapses). Alternately, you can buy a cart, either permanently or temporarily from another player to complete the task.
Then return to the master one last time.
Congratulations! You are now out of attending. That means you can set piles and fields to private status, own or rent housing, and attack and be attacked by players. Time to pick a profession and start living (checking out a guild might not be a bad idea either).
