Combat Overview

This overview contains information related to the combat skill set. All information currently displayed here is subject to change.

Attacks

  • Normal attack: Click the RMB (Right Mouse Button) on the body part you wish to strike.
  • Off-hand attack: Click the LMB (Left Mouse Button) on the body part you wish to strike.<--This feature only works with a shield equiped
  • Ranged attack (normal/off-hand attack): Press the middle mouse button. Aim Above your target.
  • There is also unarmed brawling.

Body Parts

Your landed blows will deplete the stats of your opponent, and location of your hits will determine which stats in particular are hurt. When any particular stat is fully depleted, you are incapacitated. When you are incapacitated, you lose all your vigour, can not perform any action and are open to a deathblow, or able to recieve aidfrom an ally. The time that it takes to get up after being incapacitated is varied.

Attack Styles

Different variations of attacks can be performed by pressing and holding a direction on the movement keys (W, S, D, or A by default, or the arrow keys) and clicking the RMB. Each have varying vigour costs and effectiveness.

  • Thrust: Attack while standing still.
  • Lunge: Attack while holding forward (UP ARROW or W).
  • Overhead Swing: Attack while holding away (DOWN ARROW or S).
  • Slash to left/right: Attack while holding either side direction (LEFT ARROW, RIGHT ARROW, A, D).

Defense

  • There are three types of skill-based defense:

    • Dodge - Dodging depends on your dodge skill. It is the only defense that can be toggled on/off. F4 is by default bound as /toggledodge. Pressing it will toggle dodge on and off.
    • Block - Blocking is the second layer of defense. It depends on your block skill. Your character will lift his left arm and attempt to block. If he is not wielding anything, he will attempt to block with his hand, and possibly damage it in the process. It is impossible to block if the attack is dealt on the right side of your body (right arm/leg).
    • Parry - Parrying is the third layer of defense. It depends on your parry skill. Your character will lift his right hand and attempt to "block" back a blow. If he is not wielding anything, he will attempt to parry with his hand, and possibly damage it in the process. It is impossible to parry if the attack is dealt on the left side of your body (left arm/leg).
  • Another aspect of your defense is your Armour.

Vigour

It is very important to manage your vigor in combat. If you get tired, you can not defend yourself and are an easy prey to attackers. Adrenaline plays a part in this (although currently not properly implemented). Attack type plays a huge role in how much you can manage your vigour. The foolish combatant will lunge his vigour to death. Although a powerful attack, it should be dealt out with the most care, and moderation. Thrusts are the most common form of attack in Roma Victor, which can deal quite some damage in their own right. It is good to moderate these as well, for combatants often get carried away and find they have no vigour to dodge block or parry! Slash to the left and slash to the right use slightly more vigour than a thrust, and are most effective with weapons such as falx_a. Overhead swings use a slight more amount of vigour than slashes, which can only deal a blow to the head. This is regarded as the least effective move by combatants; it's not "vigour-safe", and is easily deflected by a helmet when a spear is used.

Defensives: (Dodge block and parry)

These defensive skills are vital to survival in a battle. There are varying methods to train these skills, all involve a great amount of practise. Many speculate over the most cost effective, fastest and most enjoyable methods of training the skill. All that is really common for each belief is the fact that to gain dodge, block and parry you must fail to dodge block or parry. You learn from your mistakes.

Offensives: (Weapon skills)

The most common offensive skill in Roma Victor is spear. This is due to the fact it is probably the easiest to train, and has a relatively long range. However, that does not render the sword or axe useless - far from it. They have yet to been properly utilised by most combatant's in Roma Victor. Again, it is speculated over the most cost effective, fast and enjoyable methods to train offensive combat skills. The common factor for each method it that you need to miss your target to gain offensive skills. You learn from your mistakes.
